According to Mike Kuniaysky, user research is “the process of understanding the impact of design on an audience.”
A user researcher focuses on understanding a user group’s needs before a product is developed. They then run observations on users’ interactions with the product and use formal techniques to chart feedback. This feedback is analyzed for insights that tell designers and creators what interactions to improve and how to improve it. Their focus will be on gathering information on a product's usability and user pleasure. A user researcher will be responsible for recruiting suitable users and running tests on them.
